Attaching and effacing Escherichia coli (AEEC) are extracellular pathogens that induce the formation of actin-rich structures at their sites of attachment to eukaryotic host cells. We analysed whether small GTP-binding proteins of the Rho- and Ras-subfamilies, which control the cellular actin system, are essential for these bacterial-induced microfilament reorganizations. For this purpose we specifically inactivated them using the Clostridium difficile toxins TcdB-10463 and TcdB-1470. Such treatment led to a dramatic breakdown of the normal actin cytoskeleton, but did not abrogate the bacterial-induced actin rearrangements. Identification of a clone of Escherichia coli O103:H2 as a potential agent of hemolytic-uremic syndrome in France

In a French multicenter study, six verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli strains were isolated from the stools of 6 of 69 children suffering from hemolytic-uremic syndrome. All strains belonged to serotype O103:H2, a serotype commonly associated with diarrhea in weaned rabbits in France. To determine whether the strains from humans and rabbits were genetically related, they were compared by analyzing their esterase electropherotypes and the restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the ribosomal DNA regions. Abstract Rationale: Haemolytic-uremic syndrome is a rare but serious complication of bacterial and viral infections, which is characterized by the triad of: acute renal failure, microangiopathic haemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia, sometimes severe, requiring peritoneal dialysis. Characterization of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 isolated in Italy and in France

ABSTRACT Twenty-one Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains isolated in northern Italy from sporadic cases of hemolytic-uremic syndrome and from cattle and food were characterized by virulence gene analysis, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of Xba I-digested DNA, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) sequence-based PCR (ERIC-PCR), and antibiotic resistance patterns and compared to 18 strains isolated in France from human cases of diarrhea, cattle, and the environment.
